Hi! My name is Katie Ewan and I've recently taken the leap to become a full-time freelance artist.
Since I was a little girl I have been very creative, always looking for a crafty hobby, painting and drawing. My first painting apron as a toddler was a towel my mum cut a hole in and tied with a belt! Something that was necessary as I had a tendency to send glitter EVERYWHERE. At primary school I entered every art competition the school and village offered, with my village landscapes often securing first place. Later, at secondary school I was awarded an Art Scholarship and followed it through GCSE and A-Level. I was interested in every medium, trying my hand at Lino-print, acrylic painting, sewing and embroidery, photography, film, installations and pen drawing.
After school I had really wanted to go to Art College, and with hindsight it was 100% the right choice... But I did Psychology at University. During the lockdown I got back into my art, painting a watercolour series of favourite places myself, family and friends have visited. This led to a watercolour of Elveden Hall, which was used by GeeWizz Charity to advertise their fundraiser with John Sheeran hosted at Elveden Hall by Lord Iveagh. It was surreal seeing my art blow-up across table numbers, event posters, invites, thank you cards, and used on the event presentation screens. It was then that I knew I wanted to pursue art as a career, but I wasn't sure how.
I started working as a Greeting Card Designer, using Adobe Illustrator for the first time, and teaching myself a lot along the way. It was my first foray into the world of digital art, and I just LOVED it. I loved how bold, and free it was. In a totally different way to my pen drawings, you could make no mistakes. With digital art you just "undo". For a totally opposite reason I love drawing in biro pen, you can't undo anything. Both take any the fear of making a mistake, and let me just run with my creativity. During my time as a Greeting Card Designer, I spent my most creative time of my career to date. However, I was itching for more.
So I'm doing more!
This is me, boldly (or trying to be) pursuing what I have always loved, and what I should have done all along. I hope I can make the little toddler in a homemade apron happy.
